| Building Community Capacity & Partnership Training
It’s all about making a positive difference to the capacity and skills of the members of the community in question because they participate with other members of that community in activities directed towards meeting their needs in some way. Sometimes this process is described as “empowerment”. Nobody wants to have their “capacity built” just for the sake of it – it has to be done for a purpose. Most community groups develop negotiating and partnership skills from the day they are formed. They have to – few are in a position of power and they have to develop, learn and negotiate in order to achieve it. Building community capacity goes hand in hand with building partnerships. Many social service organizations have a "deficit" perspective. They focus on addressing problems rather than on preventing problems. By contrast, a capacity-building approach focuses on "assets." Communities need programs and practices that build upon their strengths. Capacity-building experiences challenge residents and staff to seek perspective, grow, learn, and evolve. This creates a positive environment for community, individual, family and staff development. The objectives of this 3 day workshop are to: · Ensure participants understand the meaning of “Building Community Capacity” · Assist the participants in evaluating their own partnership activity. · Identify the issues and challenges within partnerships and building community capacity. · Give participants an opportunity to determine how the programs and services available through government can be used to assist in the community development process. · Assist the group to develop strategies for responding to as many of these issues and challenges as possible. · Complete an action plan to both continue the learning and apply the learning back on the job. |
